Gov. Dannel P. Malloy joined a group of governors in writing U.S. House Speaker John Boehner Wednesday asking him to support immigration reform proposals passed by the Senate last month.
In a letter addressed to Boehner and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, governors from a handful of states urged the House to adopt immigration reforms similar to those passed by the Senate on June 27.
“We all recognize that immigrants contribute a great deal to our economy and our culture. We should make sure they are fully integrated into the social, civic and economic fabric of American life and have access to the same opportunities to succeed as everyone else. As governors, we encourage you to adopt bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform legislation that reflects the values of our nation and contributes to the growth of our economies,” the governors wrote.
In addition to Malloy, the letter was signed by the governors of Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington.
In a press release, Pelosi said House Democrats were ready to pass the proposals. She said the governors who signed the letter, most of whom were Democrats, represented a “diverse cross-section of the United States.”
“Leaders in city halls and state capitols nationwide know that immigration reform is not only the right thing to do, it is a necessary step we must take to protect our workforce, reduce our deficit, and grow our economy,” she said.
