Sue Hatfield was elected Monday by members of the Connecticut Republican Party to serve out the remainder of JR Romano’s term.
Romano stepped down unexpectedly in January with six months left on his term. A handful of candidates stepped forward to run for the chairmanship and Hatfield, who had been vice chair, originally expressed no interest in the position. At some point that changed and she threw her hat into the ring.
In 2018, Hatfield was the Republican Party’s choice to run for attorney general. She is also a state prosecutor.
“We are at an important crossroads,” Hatfield said in a press release following the election. “With the leadership of our elected officials from the state legislature, to our town halls, we can create a better way forward. Together, we can make Connecticut a place where our children and grandchildren will be able to stay and raise their families.”
When Hatfield was elected vice chairwoman of the party in 2019 she said she wanted to engage Republican voters in the cities. She said the cities are often ignored by the Republican Party, but she thinks the party will be successful in what are typically considered Democratic Party strongholds.
