In the wake of the Jan. 6 attack on Congress, the FBI has stated that there are plans for “armed protests” at all 50 state capitols and Washington in the coming weeks. That includes Hartford.
If you are planning on going to the Capitol with a weapon, I am talking to you right now. Let’s concede that there were voting irregularities. Let’s even concede that President Trump was cheated out of a second term.
Are any of those events actually worth killing another human being over?
Because that’s what weapons are for. They are not made for aggressively demanding political action. They are made to kill people. The signal you are sending to the people around you when you make a demand with a weapon in your hand is, “If I don’t get my way, I am going to kill you.”
Are you ready for that? Are you ready to kill someone in Connecticut because you think that voting may have been fishy a thousand miles away? If you’re not ready to kill someone, put your weapons away and stay home. The only way you can guarantee that you don’t take a life is to be nowhere near a situation where it can predictably happen.
If you think you’re ready to kill people, then you need to recalculate. What exactly are you killing for? Democracy? The right to be heard? Voting integrity? Do ANY of those goals sound like they’ll be served if you destroy another life?
Folks, there are already bombs going off. A suicide bombing occurred on Christmas day in Nashville. There were at least three bombs found in Washington. All of these are acts of war, not protest. You are not arming yourself to go protest, no matter what anyone has told you. You are joining a war because you have organized yourself and others with weapons.
I am not writing to defend the government, because I don’t think our federal government is functional at all. It hasn’t passed a regular budget in almost 25 years. It completely failed to bring the novel coronavirus under control. During two different financial crises in the last 15 years, the federal government has shoveled billions of dollars to corporations and other monied interests while the people have been left to fight over Door Dash routes to make ends meet. Democrats and Republicans, Obama and Trump, all of them have made it clear that their primary objective is protecting the politically and financially connected class at the expense of the rest of us.
I am writing to stop you from potentially hurting other people. Do not go to the state Capitol. Do not bring a weapon with you. Many of our federal elected officials are grifters, defense contractor plants, hypocrites, and self-interested con artists. But they are not worth escalating this war over. They are NOT worth killing someone.
