WETHERSFIELD, CT — Tom Gilmer, a Republican candidate in the Second Congressional District, was charged Monday with strangulation and unlawful restraint.
Gilmer is on the ballot today in the Second Congressional District as the endorsed Republican who is running against Justin Anderson.
Wethersfield police say they were contacted on July 22 about “a possible domestic assault that occurred in town.” They served a felony arrest warrant with Madison police Monday night, according to a written statement.
Gilmer was released on a $5,000 bond and is expected to appear in New Britain Superior Court today.
Republican Party Chairman JR Romano said Gilmer has ended his campaign. However, the Secretary of the State’s office said as of 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, Gilmer had not withdrawn his name from the ballot.
Romano said they will encourage Gilmer to withdraw his name from the ballot and end his campaign.
If Gilmer, the endorsed candidate, wins the nomination today and then submits his resignation the party could replace him with another candidate.
Anderson, Gilmer’s Republican opponent, claims he tried to bring allegations forward to Republican Party leaders in April, but was unsuccessful.
Asked about Anderson’s accusation, Romano said “we believe in due process and these are serious allegations.”
Romano said they need to be focused as a party on defeating U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney.
Romano said they will encourage Gilmer to withdraw his name from the ballot and end his campaign.
