HARTFORD, CT — Based on the latest public health information, legislative leaders decided Thursday to close the state Capitol and Legislative Office Building until March 30.
In a joint statement the leaders acknowledged it means they will miss deadlines to pass certain bills and they are “contemplating ways to continue business following this suspension.”
The General Assembly must adjourn on May 6.
Just yesterday they had planned to cancel only public hearings, but continue with a meeting schedule that would allow lawmakers to vote via telephone.
That changed Thursday when Gov. Ned Lamont signed an executive order that prohibited all gatherings of more than 250 people. There are 541 employees who work in the Legislative Office Building and 187 lawmakers.
“We will be asking all staff to work from home during this two week closure,” legislative leaders said in a joint statement.
