A judge postponed a sentencing hearing Monday for Lisa Wilson-Foley, the former congressional candidate who pleaded guilty to corruption charges. The deferral will allow Wilson-Foley to travel with her child to a camp in France.
Wilson-Foley, a 2012 Republican candidate for the 5th Congressional District, and her husband, Brian Foley, pleaded guilty in March to charges they illegally paid former Gov. John G. Rowland $35,000 in campaign consulting fees.
Both Foleys were scheduled to be sentenced at a federal court in Bridgeport on Monday afternoon, but that sentencing was postponed in April. Meanwhile, a judge granted a request filed by Wilson-Foley last month to leave the country Wednesday.
“On May 26, 2014, Ms. Wilson-Foley requested permission from her probation officer to travel outside of the United States in order to accompany her child to camp in France from June 25, 2014 until July 2, 2014,” a motion from her lawyer reads.
The Foleys are not expected to be sentenced to prison time as they have been cooperating with prosecutors and have implicated Rowland, who is himself now facing seven campaign finance corruption charges.
The Foleys sentencing was postponed in April three days after Rowland pleaded not guilty and decided to take his case to trial. It’s likely Wilson-Foley could be asked to testify.
Rowland, who previously served 10 months in federal prison on a conspiracy charge after resigning the governor’s office in 2004, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. A jury trial is expected to start in September.
