Joe Visconti, one of the six Republicans vying for his party’s gubernatorial nomination, said he plans next week to start gathering the necessary signatures to gain access to the August primary ballot.
Visconti, a former West Hartford Town Councilor, said Thursday that he’s confident he will receive 15 percent of the delegate support he needs at the May 17th Republican nominating convention, but he’s keeping all his options open.
He said he plans to use the petition drive to gather more than the necessary 8,190 signatures and register Republicans to vote. His goal is to collect the signatures before voters start leaving for their summer vacations. The petitions are due before June 10.
Visconti said he has an “army” of volunteers ready to start collecting signatures on April 30.
“I like politics in the street,” Visconti said. “It’s the best part of the race.”
Visconti is aware that his fundraising efforts are not as robust as his opponents, but he believes he will prevail.
“I’m the ‘Rocky’ in the race,” Visconti said.
