Gov. Dannel P. Malloy decided to play it safe and asked all first and second shift non-essential employees to stay home.
“As conditions are predicted to intensify throughout the day, we are ordering all first and second shift, non-essential state employees to stay home today,” Malloy said in a statement. “I don’t like the term non-essential because I think everyone does important work, but with poor road conditions I don’t want to put anyone in harm’s way. With heavy snow falling across the state and forecast to continue throughout the day, I am asking residents to avoid unnecessary travel.”
Malloy said he expects conditions to deteriorate throughout the day with snow falling two to four inches an hour.
As of 8:30 a.m. state police had responded to about 100 calls for assistance. Between midnight and 9 a.m. Thursday AAA Roadside Rescue Team had received about 126 calls for assistance.
The storm is expected to continue until 6 a.m. Friday.
Malloy will hold another briefing at 5 p.m. today.
