There were no changes in Derby’s Third Ward Aldermen race after a recount that lasted about three hours Tuesday. The same was true in Ansonia where Republicans swept the Democrats out of power. There were no changes in aldermanic races in two wards or on a referendum question.

In Derby, winners are Democrats David Anroman, Carmen DiCenso, and Republican Peter Olenoski, Jr. The recount was held because just two votes separated Republican incumbent Richard Dziekan from Anroman and Olenoski.

In Ansonia, because the referendum question had to be recounted as well, every ballot cast in the city on Election Day had to be checked and counted again.

While doing so, a handful of ballots turned up some interesting write-in votes, including: Mickey Mouse for mayor, Donald and Daffy Duck for Aldermen, and Felix the Cat and Lassie for Board of Education.

In West Haven where there was a hotly contested mayoral race where allegations of irregularities continued to fly even after the polls closed. There will be a recount conducted today in the contest where Mayor-elect Edward O’Brien ousted incumbent Mayor John Picard by 168 votes.

Recounts also are under way in Salem, where three races were close enough to trigger them automatically.
