Former East Hampton state Rep. Gail Hamm, an attorney who served in the legislature for 14 years before her retirement, has died.

Hamm, 62, represented the 34th Assembly District that includes East Hampton and part of Middletown. She was described by her colleagues as “devoted and passionate,” especially when it came to issues related to children.

Even as her health was failing in her last term, Majority Leader Joe Aresimowicz said Hamm would come to Hartford to fulfill the duties of her office because “she didn’t want to let down her constituents.”

“Gail was always extraordinarily thoughtful and knowledgeable and ready to fight hard for the issues she believed in,” Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman said in a statement Thursday.

Aresimowicz said he received the news of Hamm’s death Thursday morning and his thoughts and prayers are with Hamm’s friends and family.
