The state plans to open assistance centers in East Haven, Fairfield, Milford, and Norwalk for homeowners seeking assistance with damages caused by Hurricane Sandy.

The intake centers will open Thursday and offer one-on-one assistance for affected homeowners seeking to access grants under the Housing Department’s Owner Occupied Rehabilitation and Rebuilding Program. The grants range from $10,000 to $150,000 to cover replacements or renovations or to make homes more resistant to storms. The assistance will only cover expenses that cannot be paid for through insurance or other types of federal assistance.

The funds come from $72 million the state was awarded last year by the U.S. Housing and Urban Development Department to repair damage caused by the storm.

In a Wednesday statement, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said the help can’t come soon enough for residents still waiting for relief. The governor said residents are still welcome to seek assistance online, but the intake offices will aid people who want guidance.

“We no doubt have a long road ahead, but getting these offices open will be an effective way to make sure that residents know the state will see this effort through,” Malloy said. “These offices will be staffed with experts who can help homeowners navigate the application process for the Owner Occupied Rehabilitation and Rebuilding Program, which has $30 million in federal relief funds to help communities recover and rebuild from the devastation of Sandy.”

The offices will be open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. as well as Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Residents can make appointments by calling 1-866-272-1976. According to a press release from Malloy’s office, the state plans to open two additional intake offices in New London and Middlesex counties sometime in the future.
