Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Monday that he attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner over the weekend in Washington at the invite of People magazine.

The correspondents’ dinner is an annual event attended by the president as well as a host of Washington-based journalists, politicians, and celebrities. This year’s dinner was headlined by comedian and late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien.

The governor said he was seated with “Parks and Recreation” star Amy Poehler, as well as “Mad Men” actress Jessica Paré.

“It was kind of fun,” he said.

The governor’s office did not issue a press advisory ahead of Malloy’s trip. Asked Monday whether the public should be notified when the governor is leaving the state, Malloy deferred to Andrew Doba, his spokesman, who said the governor’s office keeps the news media apprised of events where Malloy is speaking or has the opportunity to be interviewed. The correspondents’ dinner fit neither category, he said.

“I can assure you, the lieutenant governor knew,” Malloy said.

The governor said he also attended an after party hosted by the MSNBC cable news network following the dinner.

“Rachel Maddow was making cocktails,” he said.
