Less than a week after Meriden Democrat Thomas Gaffey resigned his state Senate seat, Democratic sources say they’ll look to replace him with a retired teacher and school board member.

Sources said Saturday that they are looking to nominate Thomas Bruenn, a Meriden school board member and retired math teacher. Bruenn was elected to the school board in 2007 after spending more than 37 years teaching in the system.

It’s unclear if Republicans will again nominate Len Suzio, who was defeated by Gaffey in November by 5,131 votes.

Suzio is founder and president of GeoDataVision, a consulting company specializing in the federal banking regulations.

The special election for Gaffey’s seat will be held Feb. 22.
