State Sen. Jonathan Harris of West Hartford, Conn., lost his bid Saturday for the Democratic nomination for Secretary of the State, but says he plans to challenge nominee Denise Merrill of Mansfield, the former state House Majority Leader.

In the first round of voting for secretary from the floor of the Democratic State Convention in Hartford, Merrill polled 808 delegates to 552 for Harris and 455 for New Haven’s Gerry Garcia.

But as a second round of voting began, Garcia announced he would primary and withdrew his name, asking his delegates to support Harris. The question was, could they work the convention floor and combine enough delegates behind Harris to beat Merrill?

Unfortunately for Harris, he polled only 826 delegates to Merrill’s 966.
