Another New Haven politician leaped into the state’s campaign season free-for-all Wednesday, as veteran State Rep. Cam Staples announced he’s leaving the legislature after 18 years to seek the Democratic nomination for attorney general.

Staples, who’s 51, has represented New Haven and Hamden’s 96th Assembly District since 1993. As co-chair of the finance committee, he holds one of the most powerful positions at the state Capitol.

He made the announcement in a phone call to the New Haven Independent shortly past 11 a.m. Wednesday.
