Voters head to the polls today to elect their local officials in 162 cities and towns.

For the best information about your local elections there are a few cutting-edge online community news organizations to monitor throughout the day. If you live in Shelton, Seymour, Oxford, Ansonia or Derby you’ll want to check out the Valley Independent Sentinel. If you’re in New Haven you probably already know to check the New Haven Independent for the latest on the race in the Elm City. For those in West Hartford you’ll want to follow Local Online News.TV and those who live in Darien, Wilton, or New Canaan will want to visit their local Patch sites. Middletown residents should check out the Middletown Eye for the latest on that local contest.

Some interesting races to watch will be the New Britain mayor’s contest, which has state Rep. Tim O’Brien, D-New Britain, challenging three-term incumbent Republican Mayor Timothy Stewart. Political insiders have believed for a long-time this would be a close race and as such the rhetoric has at times been heated as Democrats try to reclaim the mayor’s office, which they lost in 2003.

In Darien, it was reported last week by Darien Patch that an independent candidate for first selectman, Chris Noe, served nearly three years in prison for attempted murder.

In East Haven Mayor April Capone Almon is facing re-election and a pending criminal charge for allegedly trying to stop a town police officer from having cars towed.

In Middletown there have already been allegations of political dirty tricks as Democrat Dan Drew attempts to unseat the Republican incumbent Sebastian Giuliano.
