Attorney General Richard Blumenthal will defend the state’s decision to retroactively take the nickel deposits from soda and beer cans today in Hartford Superior Court.

The beer and soda distributors filed an injunction against the state two weeks ago claiming it does not have the right to take the nickel deposits collected between Dec. 1, 2008 and April 1, 2009. The legislature decided in January to take the nickel deposits away from the distributors in an effort to plug its close to $9 billion budget deficit.
