As activists struggle to rescue gay marriage in California, New Haven’s planning a party: A crowd is expected at City Hall Wednesday to cheer on Barbara and Robin Levine-Ritterman as they become the first same-sex couple to say “I do” under state law.

Gays and lesbians will say their vows at town halls across Connecticut Wednesday, the first day that same-sex marriage becomes legal. The historic day comes on the heels of an Oct 10 State Supreme Court decision granting gay marriage rights—and an unsuccessful Nov. 4 ballot drive by those who tried to take those rights away, thwarted by poll-standing activists like Obadiah Ballinger (pictured).
