State Rep. George Wilber, D-Colebrook, resigned from his seat today effective Nov. 1. He is also withdrawing his nomination for re-election after it was disclosed that he paid $100,000 to a woman who claimed he sexually abused her as child.

Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz received Wilber’s resignation around 5 p.m.

Wilber has acknowledged he paid the woman in 2005 to avoid a lawsuit, but denies the sex abuse allegations.

It’s too late for the ballots to be reprinted. It’s also too late for Democrats to replace Wilber with another candidate. “While ballots have already been printed, elections officials can black out Rep. Wilber’s name or put stickers over it to reflect the change in the election,” Bysiewicz said.
