Below is a statement from the American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut
The American Civil Liberties Union of Connecticut has just learned that the Connecticut Department of Corrections has begun force-feeding Bill Coleman.
Coleman was restrained, by the DOC, to administer artificial hydration and electrolytes intravenously. The ACLU-CT condemns this action and calls on the state to halt the force-feeding immediately.
Bill Coleman has been clear that this action is against his wishes and has a living will denying this form of medical treatment. “Every time an IV is inserted into Bill, a competent adult, the DOC will violate his right to deny medical treatment,” said David McGuire, ACLU-CT staff attorney. “Bill’s hunger strike is a form of political protest deserving of free speech protection.”
