In the statement sent out by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, DeLauro shot back at Shays by saying, “Chris Shays’ statement about Sarah Palin and Connecticut voters is demeaning to women.”

“Governor Palin is opposed to a women’s right to choose, equal pay for women, favors Bush’s economic policies, and McCain’s health care plan which would tax health benefits. To believe that women are titillated by the idea of a woman candidate ignores their critical need for change and is an insult,” DeLauro said.

During the interview Andrea Mitchell asked Shays if Palin is in touch with the women in his district regarding the issue of a woman’s right to choose.  “She’s not in sync with that,” Shays said. “But she is a woman running. You know, not all women are pro-choice.”

Shays went onto say that “it’s a woman who should be selected not a particular type of woman.” Mitchell proceeded to ask him if Palin on the ticket will help in his race: “I think she’s awesome,” Shays responded.
