A bill that would have allowed illegal immigrants who attend high school in the state to pay the lower in-state college tuition rate died in the legislature’s Higher Education Committee Tuesday.

State Rep. Patricia Dillion, D-New Haven, said before the committee hearing Tuesday that the Republicans planned to filibuster the bill. She said the problem is there is no Parliamentarian rule to end a filibuster in committee.

In the end, there was never a debate on the bill which was placed by the chairs at the bottom of the agenda. Republicans talked the more than two dozen bills at the top of the agenda to death before the 5 p.m. deadline. It’s likely the bill could be ressurected through an Education Committee measure.
