After a public hearing last week on several bills to raise the age at which those in the criminal justice system are treated as adults to 18 from the current 16, the Independent caught up with New Haven State Rep. Toni Walker, one of the prime movers of the bills, to get an update. Connecticut is one of only three states to incarcerate 16-year-olds with adults. What’s up with that?It turns out that many professional organizations representing pediatricians, psychologists and social workers all think Connecticut’s approach is wrong-headed.
