Advice of counsel, Hartford style…

A middle aged African-American man came to the civil clerk’s counter in Hartford Superior Court today to ask about a foreclosure. Seems the lender is going after his house. The clerk gave him an appearance form, so he could receive all the documents filed by the opposition. But the man protested. “The lawyer told me the case is on hold,” he says. “You have a lawyer?” the clerk asks. “No,” the man answers, explaining that he talked to the lawyer for the other side. Ie. the lender’s lawyer. Ie. the people trying to take his house.“Well,” the clerk answers, staring intently at the man, “it depends on how much you trust them. They just spent $225 to get you into court. They’re not going to just go away.“The man filled out the form and left.
